Engineer Process Hazards Analysis Facilitator
Position for a Chemical or Mechanical Engineer with experience in Process Analysis (PHA) as a facilitator. This is a part-time position with sporadic hours of 250-500 per year, as needed.
Must have a background in chemical, pharmaceutical, refining, or other process-related industries. Knowledge and application of the PHA computer program, PHA Pro, used in this industry. This part-time position will be ideal for a recent retiree looking to supplement their retirement income. Chemical/pharmaceutical plants are located in the Athens/Atlanta/ Cornelia, Georgia areas. Pay will be based on education, experience, and skill levels. Process engineering with process safety management (PSM) experience is a major qualification.
Role Description
The Facilitator will be responsible for conducting process hazard analyses, facilitating meetings with clients, documenting findings, and recommending safety improvements. This role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to provide innovative solutions for complex challenges.
- Leading and managing structured PHA studies.
- Facilitating client team meetings and guiding discussions.
- Identifying potential hazards and developing credible scenarios.
- Analyzing safeguards, consequences, and risk levels.
- Documenting findings and recommendations using industry software (PHA-Pro, PHA Works).
- Supporting compliance with OSHA’s PSM regulations and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities and Skills:
- Certification: Professional certifications in process hazards analysis facilitation is preferred.
- Facilitation and Leadership: Leading and managing PHA studies, guiding teams through the process, and fostering collaboration.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of PHA methodologies (e.g., HAZOP, What-If, and LOPA Analysis) and related standards.
- Experience with Management of change and incident investigations.
- Communication: Effectively communicating technical information to various audiences, including client Engineers, Maintenance personnel, operators, and supervisors and other internal stakeholders.
- Documentation: Accurately documenting PHA findings, recommendations, and actions in PHA software and reports.
- Analytical and Problem-Solving: Identifying potential hazards, analyzing risks, and developing mitigation strategies.
- Risk Assessment: Understanding and applying quantitative and qualitative risk assessment techniques.
- Process Safety Management (PSM): Familiarity with PSM principles and how they relate to PHAs.
- Regulatory Compliance: Knowledge of relevant industry regulations and standards.
- Software Proficiency: Experience with PHA software (e.g., PHA-Pro, PHA Works).
Typical Responsibilities Include:
- Identifying potential hazards and developing scenarios to mitigate these hazards.
- Analyzing potential consequences and safeguards.
- Developing and implementing recommendations for risk mitigation.
- Writing and reviewing technical reports.
- Interpreting technical drawings (PFDs and P&IDS) and other technical documents.
- Assisting with process safety and risk management consulting.
- Providing training and coaching on PHA related topics.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, etc.) or a related field.
- Experience: Experience in process engineering, process safety engineering, or risk engineering.
- Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Strong ability to analyze complex processes and identify potential hazards.
- Continuous Learning: Commitment to staying current with industry developments and best practices.
